Who does not appreciate the taste and smell of a hot bread that has just been made?

With this recipe, you will be able to make 2 French breads easily and without using a bread machine.

You will see, you will never want to buy bread any more at the grocery store!

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (65 ml) warm water (at 105-115 ° F or 40-46 ° C)
  • 1 package dry active yeast
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) sugar
  • 3 1/2 - 4 cups (700-800 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) salt
  • 1 cup (250 ml) and 2 tablespoons (30 ml) warm water
  • 1 egg white and 1 tablespoon (15 ml) water.

Directions:

Mix the warm water, yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar in a bowl.

Let stand for 5 minutes until the yeast is bubbly.

Then add 1 tablespoon of sugar, salt and water. Mix well.

Add flour. Mix well and knead for 5 minutes (with a whisk or with your hands) or until the dough is smooth.

Let rise until the dough doubles in volume (about 15-20 minutes), placing it in a bowl, then cover the bowl with a clean cloth.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough with a rolling pin. (The dough can be divided into two pieces for two smaller loaves if desired.)

Roll the dough until the desired shape is obtained and turn ends under the dough.

Place the roll of dough on a greased cookie sheet. Cut 3 diagonal slits into each loaf (about 1/4 inch deep)

Mix the egg white and 1 tablespoon water, then gently brush the breads.

Preheat the oven to 300 ° F (150 ° C).

Boil a pan of water and then pour the water into a shallow dish.

Turn off the oven.

Then, place the dish with the water inside, on the lower rack of the oven and the bread on the rack over the pan of water. Let the dough rise until it doubles in size (about 20 minutes).

Remove the pan of water.

Leave the bread in the oven and heat the oven to 425 ° F (220 ° C). Cook the bread for 10 minutes (this includes the preheating time)

Reduce the oven to 375 ° F (190 ° C) after 10 minutes and cook another 6-8 minutes or until the bread is golden brown.
