How to inflate a balloon without helium!

Did you know that helium is becoming more and more rare? And did you know that helium cylinders are not very environmentally friendly?

Here is an alternative for inflating birthday balloons! And do not worry! It's the gas that gets into the balloon, not the vinegar. It will not smell when you burst it.

  • You must first add 3 to 5 cm of white vinegar (also called distilled vinegar) in a narrow-necked recuperated plastic bottle (like a small soda bottle you get at the convenience store).
  • Then put about 2 tablespoons of baking soda into an inflatable balloon using a funnel.
  • Fit the balloon on the neck of the bottle taking care not to drop bicarbonate in the bottle.
  • Now, raise the balloon above the bottle, and witness the reaction!
  • If the reaction is slow, shake the bottle slightly.
  • If it does not work, wait 1 minute, empty the bottle and start again with new vinegar and another balloon filled with baking soda.
  • Do not overdo it with the vinegar: the bottle must not be filled more than to the third.
  • Remove the balloon by pinching it, and tie a knot.
