Many people keep their spare change in a coin jar at home, in the cup holder inside the car or somewhere in the cracks of their couch! If you have a jar full of coins at home it might be time to go through them.
While some rare and old coins might be worth a few hundred dollars, there is a super rare dime that sold for $1.9 million in an auction in Tampa, Florida! Don't get too excited, that coin is so rare that it is called the "King of Dime".
Named the 1894-S Barber dime after the designer Charles Barber. It has an "S" on the tail side to signify it was produced in San Francisco. Legend has it that John Daggett, the head of San Francisco Mint, had commissioned for twenty-four of the dimes to be minted and gave three of them to his daughter Hallie, who ended up buying ice cream with one of them!
Today, people think that only 9 of the coins are accounted for and the other ones might be in your possession! To recognize it, you have to look for the "S" on the back. Here are some other coins that a worth a small fortune:
- 1969-S Lincoln penny – can be worth up to $35,000.
- 2004 Wisconsin quarter – worth up to $300.
- 1999 Lincoln penny – worth up to $600.
- Silver dollars minted in 1964 or earlier are worth their weight in silver.
